Qualifications:
- Educate patients on treatment options, including the benefits and drawbacks of specific treatments and, where appropriate, alternatives.
- Determines the necessity for dental and prosthetic equipment by examining the mouth of the patient to identify the type of restoration required.
- For surgeries that cannot be performed within the institution, makes necessary referrals.
- Auxiliary and clerical employees receive proper training and job direction. As needed, provides clinic management with input on the job performance of auxiliary and clerical staff.
- Comply with all applicable federal, state, municipal, and dental clinic rules, regulations, protocols, and procedures governing the practice of dentistry, including those controlling personnel issues, workplace safety, public health, and confidentiality.
- Examines people’s teeth and associated oral tissues via x-rays, mouth mirrors, and other diagnostic procedures and equipment to determine abnormal or irregular conditions.
- As needed, collaborate with other clinical and non-clinical professionals to contribute to a collaborative and team-oriented environment.
- Examine, diagnose, prescribe, and perform (or direct others to perform) oral health care services in the best interests of the patient.
- Taking advantage of chances for ongoing education and training to improve your clinical skills and knowledge.
- Document patient-dentist contacts as they occur in the patient’s dental record so that the record accurately reflects the nature of the encounter, the patient’s condition, and the care or treatment provided. Make necessary written referrals and, if necessary, obtain written approval.
Skills:
- Acquire and maintain a high level of clinical dentistry knowledge, with a focus on topics that are useful in a dental clinic, such as pediatric dentistry, emergency dental care, extractions, and dental care prevention.
- A current, valid license to practice dentistry in the state where services are delivered (licensing must be in good standing) or eligibility for licensure in the state where services are provided.
- A valid DEA license is required, which must be current and in good standing.
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills are required.
- The applicant must possess a strong sense of leadership as well as a strong desire to learn and enhance his skills.
