Job Description
The Geologist performs permitting actions in the Solid Waste Permitting program and provides technical assistance in multi-media programs, including reviewing and evaluating permit applications and/or waste cleanup submittals, drafting permits and associated permitting and/or waste cleanup documents, completing all required data entry into applicable databases, providing technical assistance to regulated entities, participating in outreach events, and investigating contamination.

Qualifications:
- Strong computer skills, like knowing how to use Word, Excel, and database software. Knowing how to use ArcGIS and CAD is a plus. Familiarity with remedial systems and how they work. General construction and mechanical skills are a plus.
- Preparing proposals and cost estimates, designing corrective mechanisms, monitoring implementation/construction, writing technical reports, and mentoring are examples of project management.
- Every day, management needs to know what’s going on, so it’s important to write these reports and keep in touch with them. Inventory management and moving samples are two examples of logistical tasks.
- Monitoring drilling and well installation and keeping track of soil boreholes are among the most common tasks. Samples of the soil and groundwater will be taken for testing.
- Produce, if necessary, requests for further information and permits/documents that are technically correct, clear, comprehensible, and compliant with stated laws, instructions, and procedures.
- Involved in assisting solid waste and water facility permitting engineers and compliance personnel in the review of environmental sampling and water quality monitoring plans for assigned solid waste projects.
- This means that drillers must report mechanical concerns, the condition of the hole, and the results of surveys to management.
- For submissions to Solid Waste & Waste Cleanup, evaluate geological and risk assessment documents with District or applicable Division personnel. You should thoroughly review any extra site rehabilitation plans and documentation that your supervisors or managers have provided you to complete projects.
- They may be required to conduct investigations into remediation methods, create remedial systems, feasibility studies, groundwater monitoring plans and reports, cost estimates, and write technical papers.
- The Project Manager should be informed of any issues that arise, such as cost and time overruns, scope modifications requested by the customer, or potential liability exposure.

- An environment in a mining or manufacturing plant might expose workers to dangerous conditions, including extremes in temperature or humidity, electrical shocks, and toxic substances.
- To be qualified for this post, you must have one year of specialized federal government experience or education equivalent to the GS-07. To meet this requirement, you must have worked in the field collecting, analyzing, and reporting on soil and rock sample data, as well as providing standard data to higher-level specialists, conducting studies or investigations, and/or assisting in the administration of mineral locateable and sellable activities.
- Ability to execute field and site inspections for groundwater monitoring wells at solid waste sites and for closed landfills.
- A bachelor’s or higher degree in geology plus at least 20 extra semester hours in mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural engineering, mining, petroleum engineering, or computer science from an approved college or university is required for consideration.
