Job Description
The forester is in charge of maintaining the forest, which involves evaluating suspected unhealthy trees, maintaining the tree inventory, and keeping documents connected to that inventory. The Forester directs first-line work, does manual and semi-skilled labor in the upkeep of public trees and right-of-way. Expertise in technical and professional matters is provided to dangerous trees on both public and private lands. Provides guidance to seasonal and part-time employees assigned to help the Forester in the division’s operations.

Qualifications:

- Make sure forestry-related websites are up-to-date and generate new outreach materials to promote different projects..
- Asses and reports on the accuracy of information contained in submitted plans, coordinates inspections with lower-level officials, reviews factors, and grants or denies applications; notifies applicants in writing of reasons for denial; assigns and takes part in the inspection of clearing activities to ensure that they comply with municipal codes and ordinances.
- Verifies, sets up, and inventories the yearly thin and harvest schedule, as well as road design and access rights of way and any other duties that may be necessary in connection with the sale administration of the crop.
- Responsible for appointing and participating in tree and landscaping inspections, as mandated by municipal ordinance; ensuring that plant materials used are acceptable in terms of quality, quantity, and type; ensuring that proper procedures for protecting existing and installing new plants are followed; ensuring that provisions for maintenance and care of plant materials are provided.
- Assisting with all stages of silviculture, forest management, and harvest monitoring on company-owned or private property.
- Assess the state of county-owned forestland and assist in the development of forest stewardship plans that will aid in the management of the land in the future. We collect and analyze data from the field as part of our job responsibilities. This assists us in determining how the forest is structured. Working with personnel and contractors is required in order to utilize the Forest Landscape Assessment Tool (FLAT). It may be used to examine the condition of any forestland parcels that have recently been purchased or that are in the process of being purchased.
- Entrusted with several duties, including monitoring and ensuring that the region’s silviculture strategy and yearly plan are being carried out, as well as conducting field verification of treatment candidates and sending relevant information to the management team.
- Consults with other site plan review personnel (stormwater, zoning, transportation) to verify that the code requirements for other disciplines can be accomplished without causing conflicts with the tree and landscape code.
- Primary duties include ensuring that the City’s tree stock is in good health and training other Streets Division employees about appropriate tree care techniques.
Skills:
- Tree planting, upkeep (wrapping, guying, watering, mulching, weeding), pruning, trimming, disease inspection, and removal requirements and alternatives.
- Perform work outside that requires some physical endurance; train people in tree and landscaping inspections; set up and keep an effective system for inspecting trees and landscaping; and enforce codes, ordinances, and regulations firmly, tactfully, and impartially. These are just some of the skills needed to be a tree and landscaping inspector.
- Capacity to develop and maintain good working connections with coworkers, departments, and the general public.
- From an approved institution or university, six months of experience in landscape design and six months of experience in tree and landscape inspections is required for all applications
- Computer skills in Microsoft Office, especially Excel and Word, are important, as are good verbal and written communication skills.
